Home News US citizens robbed after arriving in Guyana
Five persons, including four United States-based Guyanese, were robbed at gunpoint by four unmasked men at Leopold and Breda Streets, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown.
Among the victims were 64-year-old Darlene Gaines of the USA and of Coomacka Mines in Linden, who was robbed of one Samsung Galaxy S8 cellular phone valued at $140,000 and a quantity of medications amounting to $80,000.
Also robbed was 19-year-old Daisy Gaines-Sluss of the USA and of Coomacka Mines, who was relieved of one MP3 Player value $5,000 and her United States of America passport.
Sixty-year-old Joe Hughes of the USA and of Coomacka Mines was relieved of a quantity of US currency amounting to Gy$160,000.
Forty-five-year-old Christina Gaines-Sluss of the USA and of Coomacka Mines was relieved of a quantity of US currency amounting to Gy$260,000, as well as her US passport and other documents.
And 40-year-old Robin Collins, a housewife of Coomacka Mines, was relieved of one Samsung Galaxy cellphone valued at $40,000, one LG cellphone valued at $40,000, and $9000 in cash.
The incident occurred at about 13:00h on Friday.
According to reports, except for Robin Collins, all five victims are members of the Coomacka Church of Christ, who arrived in Guyana from the USA.
Darlene, Daisy, Joe and Christina were picked up at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport by Robin and Wayne Collins, also of Coomacka Mines, in minibus BKK 337. They all then proceeded to Georgetown to do some shopping, and as they were proceeding east along Leopold Street, Wayne slowed down at Cross Street to allow other vehicles to pass.
At that point, one of the suspects walked up to him and held him at gunpoint. The perpetrator then pulled out the bus keys, while three other suspects rushed up and relieved the other occupants in the vehicle of their belongings. The four suspects then made good their escape by running east along Leopold Street.
The matter was reported and a search was conducted in the area for the suspects, but they were not found. Investigations are continuing.
