Already named in their 2026 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) line-up, Jonathan Van Lange can make his Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) debut sooner than expected as he laces up his boots for the franchise in the 2026 ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League (GSL).
According to the ExxonMobil GSL, Van Lange will replace wicketkeeper/batsman Amir Jangoo following his selection to the West Indies Test squad.
Catching up with the 19-year-old just hours after the news broke, Van Lange was “pretty excited”.
“First, I just want to thank God for giving me the opportunity for being selected for GSL. It’s something that I’ve obviously been working towards; getting picked for CPL first up was very exciting for me. GSL is just another stepping stone in my career, looking to learn both off and on the field from some of the best players in the world,” Van Lange told media operatives on the side-lines of a GSL event on Thursday. So, it’s pretty exciting for me.”
Earlier this year, the West Indies Under-19 standout slammed a century on his senior four-day debut for the Guyana Harpy Eagles (GHE) against the West Indies Academy, following it up with a half-century against the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force in the West Indies Championships final.
Agreeing that it has been a dream year in the sport thus far, the teenager detailed some aspects he will be working on.
The all-rounder admitted, “Yeah, definitely so far. I’m just looking to be the best player that I can be, just to keep performing at the highest level.”
“Off the field, definitely fitness is something that… I wouldn’t say struggling with; I’d say getting better at every year,” the teenager divulged. “In terms of the cricket per se, there’s different shot selections, that I guess will come over time with experience and facing different bowling attacks at different stages.”
As he prepares for his debut, the Guyanese crowds and learning from the best players around are what Van Lange is most looking forward to.
“I guess the first thing would be getting acquainted with playing in front of big crowds, especially. We know how the crowds in Guyana get the support we get. So, that’s just a major thing for me to learn from, and again, just learn from the Hetmyers and the Shepherds around the cricket that have been playing and performing at their best at the highest level as well,” he expressed.
Quizzed about balancing Cricket and Table Tennis in light of his new commitments, Van Lange says it will come down to time management.
Van Lange explained, “It’s a bit more difficult, as cricket is always now more year-round. The more tournaments you get picked for, the more away you are from the sport of table tennis. And table tennis is a sport you need to keep practising to become better. So, I wouldn’t say it’s getting more difficult, just that I have to manage my time better.”
GAW will be defending their title at the ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League from July 23 to August 1.
The GAW squad now reads Shimron Hetmyer, Romario Shepherd, Rovman Powell, Gudakesh Motie, Glenn Phillips, Imran Tahir, Dwaine Pretorius, Mohammad Nabi, Muhammad Haris, Johnson Charles, Quentin Sampson, Keemo Paul, Matthew Forde, and Jonathan Van Lange.
