Fruit vendor Chandrawattie Jaikaran on Monday appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, charged for obstruction of traffic while plying her trade of vending.
Jaikaran pleaded guilty to the charge, which detailed that on September 6, 2018, she caused an obstruction to the public way by placing therein two wheel burrows containing limes, oranges and carrots, along with other bags.
In the facts presented the court, the police claimed that on the day in question, at Waterloo Street, Georgetown, Constable Sears observed the defendant standing behind two wheel burrows containing the above mentioned fruits, and persons using the roadway having to divert.
Having observed Jaikaran in this position for three days, Constable Sears confronted her and enquired if she had permission to sell, and she replied in the affirmative. However, this was not the case, and she was arrested and later charged for the offence.
In defending herself, Jaikaran told the court she was not present at the time the constable visited, but was instead arrested and charged.
As a penalty for the offence, the Chief Magistrate has ordered that Jaikaran perform 2 weeks’ community service.
