Vendor granted $100,000 bail for escaping lawful custody

A vendor of Lot 22 Yarrowdam, Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was granted 0,000 bail for escaping lawful custody when he appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Johnathan Mohammed, 25, was also charged with unlawful wounding.

It was alleged that on September 24, 2016, in Georgetown, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Shante Williams. It was further alleged that on the same day while being in custody for unlawful wounding, he escaped.

Mohammed pleaded not guilty to both charges.

Police prosecution facts revealed that the defendant while being in custody at the Ruimveldt Police Outpost, asked to use the lavatory. He was relieved of handcuffs and shackles and so seized the opportunity to escape on foot. He was caught the following day, arrested and charged.

Williams however told the court that she would like to withdraw the matter against Mohammed. As such, she was questioned by police prosecutor whether she was forced to withdraw the matter but replied in the negative.

The charge of unlawful wounding was subsequently withdrawn against Mohammed.

The charge of escaping lawful custody was maintained against him and he will make his next court appearance on October 14, 2016.
