Vendor remanded for ganja possession

Forty-eight-year-old Gregory Payne was on Thursday remanded to prison after making his appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts before Magistrate Faith McGusty for the unlawful possession of cannabis.

Payne, a vendor and father of one, was allegedly found in possession of 203 grams of cannabis on January 12, 2017, in the city of Georgetown.ganja

He entered a not-guilty plea to the charge, explaining that on the day in question, he was on the premises of a boxing gym in Kitty, Georgetown, where he would usually pick up his son on a daily basis. He stated that the said item was found in a public place and not in his possession, claiming that the culprit had escaped and the Police had mistakenly arrested him.

However, according to the prosecution’s case, the parcel was found tucked in the defendant’s shirt, contrary to his version of events.

Bail was refused and the Magistrate remanded the man to prison. Payne will make his next court appearance on February 13, 2017 at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
