Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield informed the court that Marques had gone to the woman’s shop to purchase a backpack on July 1. Someone had then called the businesswoman, and she went outside the building, leaving Marques alone inside. When she returned, Marques paid for the backpack and left.
The businesswoman later discovered that the money was missing from her shop, and she reported the matter to the Port Kaituma Police Station. Marques was subsequently arrested, and the money was found on his person.
In his defence, Marques told the court he had taken the money to buy clothes for himself.
Marques will be deported after serving the six-month sentence.
