The capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, announced Saturday by United States (US) President Donald Trump, was celebrated by Venezuelans at the Civic Centre in Boa Vista, Brazil, on the same evening. Amid hugs and demonstrations, the immigrants followed the developments of the political crisis in the neighbouring country.

A resident of Brazil for eight years, Venezuelan Yetzy Perori left the country during the most intense period of the crisis. Commenting on Maduro’s capture, she described the moment as a profound relief. According to Yetzy, the situation experienced by Venezuelans forced thousands of families to leave the country. “It was horrible, horrible,” she said, recalling the period when she decided to migrate. For her, the news rekindles the hope of a permanent return. “I believe that no one will stay behind. I believe that we will all return. In the name of God, we will all go,” she declared.
The Venezuelan woman said she learnt of the capture in the early hours of the morning through messages sent by her son, who remains in Venezuela. Despite the celebration, she stated that concern for relatives who stayed in the country remains.
