Venezuelans, Guyanese charged for killing miner

Three men were on Wednesday remanded to prison for the murder of 26-year-old miner Kevin Allam of Tune Basin, Port Kaituma, North West District (NWD), Region One (Barima-Waini).

Angel Figuera, 20, and Gilberto Da Silva, 22, both Venezuelans, and Nadeem Baksh, 22, a Guyanese, appeared virtually before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Port Kaituma Magistrate’s Court.

They were not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that on November 27 at White Water Backdam, NWD, they murdered Allam. They were all remanded to prison until December 22.

Based on information on November 27, the now dead man’s reputed wife was at their shop when she was approached by the three men who held onto her hair. Upon seeing this, Allam went to her assistance, but was attacked and dealt several lashes about his body with a piece of wood.

After Allam fell unconscious, the three men dragged him a short distance from the shop where one of them whipped out a knife and slit his throat. After committing the act, the men reportedly left Allam in a pool of blood and returned to the shop where they relieved his spouse of a quantity of raw gold.

He was subsequently picked up and taken to the Port Kaituma Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police, acting on information, travelled to the waterfront, where they arrested the three men.
