The Sophia, Georgetown man who fought for his life and reportedly stabbed a thief who was robbing him was on Monday charged for manslaughter.

Fifty-six-year-old Peter Jansen, of Lot 134 Block X North Sophia, Greater Georgetown appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
He was not allowed to plead to the charge which stated that on May 1, 2018 at Sophia, he unlawfully killed Shelton Jordan.
Guyana Times previously reported that Jordan, called “Mickey Mouse”, was killed when he attacked Jansen and reportedly attempted to steal his bird about 05:30h.
During the course of the robbery, Jordan reportedly stabbed Jansen to his hand. This resulted in a scuffle between the two.
Jansen, however, managed to disarm Jordan of the knife he was carrying, and during the fight, the thief was reportedly stabbed.
The father of five then proceeded to the Police Station where he reported what transpired.
Jansen’s Attorney, Latchmie Rahamat, in a bail application, told the court that her client was entitled to protect himself from danger.
She revealed that after attempting to steal the bird but failing, Jordan pursued her client who had begun to run away, and then pulled out the knife and attacked him.
In her bail application, Rahamat cited Article 148 (2) of the Constitution, which makes provision for her client to be protected, and the deceased was not entitled to protection under the same article.
Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield had no objections to bail, but requested that Jansen lodge his passport with the court and report to the Police every week until completion of the case.
Bail was granted in the sum of $250,000. The case will continue on May 28, 2018.
Reports are several persons who had their birds stolen alleged that Jordan was among a group of men who had been prowling the area and stealing birds.
