Cycling action continues today – Sunday, September 19 – with the annual Victor Macedo Memorial Road Race, which commences at 7:30h in the vicinity of Thirst Park, Georgetown.
Competitors will proceed along the East Bank carriageway to the Linden-Soesdyke Highway, and turn back at the Long Creek School junction and the Yarrowkabra junction.
Six categories of racers would be contesting the event: seniors, juniors, juveniles, ladies, and under- and over-50. According to cycling official William Howard, the seniors, juniors and veterans’ under-50 will be turning back at Long Creek (approximately 70 miles in total) and the other categories will turn back at Yarrowkabra, and all will return to finish at the point of origin, Thirst Park.
The first six finishers in the seniors’ category will be rewarded, the first five under-50, first two juniors, firth three over-50, first two ladies and first two juveniles will be rewarded.
This race has been approved by the National COVID-19 Task Force and the Guyana Police Force.
The last Victor Macedo Memorial Race was won by Team Evolution’s Curtis Dey, who also won the race held on the outer circuits. Cyclists from all parts of Guyana will be battling for supremacy in today’s event, as the Ounce of Gold cycling looms.
That lucrative race, the “Ounce of Gold”, is set for Sunday, October 10, and riders in the same categories should be at it again, with the race commencing outside Banks DIH, Thirst Park at 7:30h.
The “Ounce of Gold” race, arguably the most anticipated cycle race in Guyana, will turn back at the Coca Cola sign at Dora and at the Yarrowkabra junction.
The late Victor Macedo was a supporter of cycling, and his family continues to carry on his legacy.
