Vieira apologises after Supermoto incident, GMR&SC promises sanctions

The Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC) has condemned an on-track incident during the Supermoto final of the MPS Kart Revival event on Sunday at the 555 Speedway, Thomas Lands, and has indicated that disciplinary action will follow.
The incident occurred during the race, which got underway around 18:00h (6:00pm), and involved two riders. During the race, Matthew Vieira attempted to overtake Ravi Singh, but the pair made contact during the manoeuvre, resulting in Singh losing control and falling to the track.
Video footage circulating appears to show Vieira, after the collision, walking back towards Singh, who was already on the ground, and slapping him.

In a statement issued on Monday, March 30, the GMR&SC said it has “taken note of an incident during the final of the Supermoto race” and condemned “in the strongest possible terms, the actions of the offender involved”. The body noted that it was acting on the matter and that “penalties and bans, in line with its code of conduct, will be instituted to deter future transgressions.”
While the GMR&SC did not name the competitors involved, Vieira issued a public apology via Instagram on Sunday night, acknowledging his conduct and accepting responsibility.
“I would like to extend my sincere apologies to the spectators of the MPS Karting Event, my sponsors, and every member of the Motor Racing Club. Most importantly, I wish to personally apologise to Ravi Singh,” he stated.
Providing context for the incident, Vieira said he was in the process of lapping Singh during the race and noted that “under normal race conditions, a blue flag from the marshals would have indicated this; however, that signal was not issued”. He added that in the moment, “with adrenaline high and emotions running strong, I allowed my frustration to get the better of me.”
“This is not an excuse, but rather an explanation. I fully acknowledge that my reaction was inappropriate and does not reflect the standards I hold myself to as a competitor.”
Addressing the wider reaction, he said, “Everyone wants to spin a narrative, but it was an adrenaline- filled action I don’t justify it. I’m deeply disappointed in myself. I’m not that kind of person.”
He also pointed to the risks involved in the sport, adding, “Racing isn’t marbles or table tennis; we are playing with our lives and it’s easy to look from the outside and to judge.”
Vieira further emphasised that he held no ill will towards Singh, stating, “I want to make it clear that I hold no personal grievance against Ravi Singh. I regret my actions and the negative impact they may have had on the event, the club, and the sport as a whole.”
He concluded; “I accept full responsibility and all consequences arising from this incident. I remain committed to learning from this experience and to conducting myself with the professionalism and respect expected both on and off the track.”
The GMR&SC also reminded stakeholders that such conduct “goes against true sportsmanship and camaraderie in the motor-racing fraternity,” while noting that it takes these matters seriously. Specific sanctions have not yet been disclosed.
