Vipers overcome Scorchers to seal victory

In Match Eight of the ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League (GSL), the Desert Vipers defeated the Perth Scorchers after winning the toss and electing to field first.
The Scorchers endured a sluggish start, crawling to 32 for two at the end of the powerplay.
Left-arm spinner Khary Pierre removed D’Arcy Short for five, while Nathan Smith accounted for Joel Curtis, who managed just one run.
Pierre struck again just after the powerplay, dismissing Usman Khan for five as the Scorchers limped to 47 for three after 10 overs. The batting unit continued to struggle for momentum, with the Vipers’ disciplined bowling attack keeping the scoring rate firmly in check. Pierre completed an excellent spell in the 13th over, finishing with figures of three for 14 from his four overs at an impressive economy rate of 3.50. At that stage, the Scorchers were 60 for three.

The pressure intensified when Vitel Lawes joined the wicket-taking party, ending Andre Fletcher’s fighting knock of 40 from 47 deliveries, which included three fours and a six. Lawes struck again soon after, removing Ashton Turner for a first-ball duck, leaving the Scorchers reeling at 68 for five after 14 overs.
With just 75 runs on the board heading into the final five overs, the Scorchers were unable to launch a late assault, adding only 37 more runs while losing one additional wicket. Akeal Hosein remained unbeaten on 32 from 35 balls, while Ashton Agar chipped in with 17 from 11 deliveries, striking one four and one six.
Perth Scorchers closed their innings on a modest 112 for six from their allotted 20 overs.
In reply, the Desert Vipers made a shaky start to their pursuit as Saiteja Mukkamalla struggled for fluency before being caught at mid-off for four from 12 deliveries. Match hero from their previous outing, Zachary Carter, also failed to make an impact, with Akeal Hosein bowling him for five from 10 balls in the final over of the powerplay.
Hosein struck again with the very next delivery, removing Shadab Khan for a first-ball duck after Ashton Turner produced an outstanding catch at slip. At the end of the powerplay, the Vipers were in trouble at 31 for three.
Sufyan Moqim then joined the attack, trapping Kyle Mayers LBW for two from seven balls. At the halfway stage, the Vipers had crawled to 59 for four, with Rilee Rossouw holding the innings together on 45 from 26 deliveries.
Rossouw soon reached his half-century, but his resistance was short-lived as Hosein claimed his third wicket of the evening, with Andre Fletcher taking the catch at deep midwicket.
Rossouw’s enterprising knock of 50 came from just 31 balls and included four fours and three sixes at a strike rate of 161.29.
The Scorchers continued to tighten their grip on the contest when a moment of brilliance in the field saw Vriitya Aravind run out by Brody Couch for 16 from 19 balls, reducing the Vipers to 85 for six.
The drama intensified in the closing overs. Khary Pierre was run out in the 18th over with the score on 103 for seven, and two deliveries later Hosein’s outstanding spell continued as he dismissed Bevon Jacobs for 11, leaving the Vipers reeling at 103 for right. Hosein finished with superb figures of four for 15 from his four overs.
Jhye Richardson then added to the tension by dismissing Sanjay Pahal in the 19th over, caught by a sharp effort at cover, leaving the Vipers at 107 for nine and needing six runs from the final over.
Vitel Lawes got the decisive over underway with a crisp square drive for four off Brody Couch. Two dot balls followed before Lawes managed a single from the fourth delivery, leaving the scores level with two balls remaining. Nathan Smith then calmly cleared the infield to strike the winning boundary, carrying the Desert Vipers to 116 for nine with two deliveries to spare and sealing a dramatic one-wicket victory.
