Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo on Wednesday met with Indigenous leaders from several communities in Region One (Barima-Waini) to discuss development and other community priorities.
The meeting was held at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre and followed the leaders’ early departure from the National Toshaos Council (NTC) Conference in July as result of the MV Barima tragedy.
According to Jagdeo, the engagement provided an opportunity for the leaders to raise matters affecting their respective communities directly with him and other members of Cabinet.
Discussions focused particularly on development issues and priorities identified by the communities.
The Vice President in a social media post said the meeting was intended to facilitate direct engagement with the Indigenous leaders on the concerns affecting communities across Region One.
The Region One leaders’ departure from the NTC Conference in July had resulted in the matters affecting their communities not being addressed through the remainder of that forum.
Several members of Cabinet including Amerindian Affairs Minister, Sarah Browne-Shadeek were also at the meeting.
