Waitress caught with cocaine in storybooks jailed

Jailed: Rena Jagernauth

A woman who attempted to traffic cocaine in children’s story books, but was caught at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) was on Wednesday jailed.
Rena Davi Jagernauth appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and admitted that on April 1, 2019, she had in her possession 4.853 kilograms of cocaine.
The 24-year-old Guyanese woman, who resides at Lot 309 Paramaribo, Suriname, was caught at the CJIA after she was observed by plain clothes Police narcotics ranks acting suspiciously.
According to the prosecution’s case, Jagernauth was an outgoing passenger on a COPA flight destined for Panama. After observing her behaviour, Police ranks identified themselves to the waitress and directed a search of her luggage, where they discovered the cocaine hidden inside four children’s storybooks.
She was taken into custody and a further search conducted revealed cocaine stashed in deodorant and perfume bottles, a makeup kit, haircutting machine and other personal items inside the suitcase. Jagernauth was subsequently arrested.
The defendant was sentenced to four years in prison and fined $13.1 million.
