Waramadong Village man charged over sexual activity with girl
Douglas Flannagan, 54, of Waramadong Village, Upper Mazaruni River, Region Seven (Cuyuni Mazaruni), appeared before Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts Magistrate Dylon Bess on Thursday last and was accused of engaging in sexual activity with a minor.
He is charged with carrying out the act on April 2, 2021, against a seven-year-old. He was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge. Bail was refused and Flannagan was remanded to prison until December 19. His matter has been transferred to the Kamarang Magistrate’s Court.
The Sexual Offences Act of 2010 states that an individual is guilty of this offence if they cause or incite the complainant to engage in sexual activity with a third party, engage in sexual activity (excluding sexual penetration) with a child under the age of sixteen, or causes the complainant to perform a sexual act, such as masturbating.
If found guilty on a summary charge, the offender faces a five-year jail sentence; if found guilty on an indictment, the penalty is ten years.
