WBD man killed during robbery at West Ruimveldt

Hours after being shot by two men on pedal cycles, a West Demerara man succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Twenty-four-year-old Wayne Jason Wharton, of Lot 277 Onderneeming, WBD, was shot to his back by the two men during an apparent robbery at West Front Road, West Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
From information gathered, the young man was standing a short distance from his mother’s home when he was attacked by the two armed men. They reportedly relieved him of a gold chain he was wearing at the time.
After being shot, he was picked up and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he died shortly after midnight.
The Police have arrested two men in connection with the murder. One of the men was reportedly found to be sporting a gold chain similar to the one that belonged to the now dead man.
Ocia Leung, a sister of the dead man told Guyana Times, that she was at home when she received news that her brother was shot and injured. “I hear that he de standing when two boys come up on bicycles and try to rob he, but he run… is when he run, they fire a bullet and it hit he to he back”, she added.
The sister further stated that two other persons were on the road, but after they saw what was happening, they ran to safety. Since it was after 20:00h, those who were indoors could not have recognised any of the men.
Leung said her brother had a stall in “Parliament View Mall” and lived an honest life to make ends meet.
The Police are continuing their investigation into the fatal shooting. Only on Tuesday, 25-year-old Gregory Garraway, of Charlestown, Georgetown, succumbed to a gunshot injury to his chest, which he sustained during a robbery.
The young man, who worked at Nigel’s Supermarket, was on his way home with a younger brother when they stopped just outside a Mandela Avenue hangout. He was reportedly making his way across the road to make a purchase when he was accosted by a man who grabbed his chain and fired a shot at him.
The young man fell to the ground and was rushed to the hospital, but died there. The gunman has not been apprehended.
