Some say, “When it rains, it pours”. At least that was the case for the Belle Vue Cricket Club as they were defeated with ease by the West Demerara Over-40 Masters (WDM).
The original match-up was for a Belle Vue Masters-West Demerara Masters showdown; however, the much younger Belle Vue side came to play.
The WDM won the toss and elected to bat first; they made 164-9 off their allotted 20 overs, which was impressive since they were playing against a much younger side.
Despite a few wickets falling early in the innings, they continued to play their natural game as Elroy Fernandes blasted a quick-fire 47 off 26 balls at the top of the order. He was also supported by Seenarine Mathura, who played a handy cameo of 26. D Singh was able to bag 3-16 for the opposition.
Needing 165 for victory off 120 balls, the much younger side was expected to take the lead, but experience reigned supreme.
The disciplined line-and-length bowling slowed things down as Belle Vue struggled to gain any momentum.
The Belle Vue side dragged things out as if they were playing a five-day Test, but in the end, they were dismissed for 68 in 19 overs. The chief destroyer was Safraz Baksh who bagged 5-12 from his allotted four overs while Seenarine Mathura chipped in with 2-17.
