‘We Believe’ Cancer Awareness female futsal tournament closes off with a bang
– Pearson crowned MVP
The inaugural “We Believe” Female Futsal tournament in honour of Cancer Awareness Month closed off with some high intensity action on Tuesday evening at the National Gymnasium.
In the opening game, Team Bibi Ali came up against Team Francine Leitch, and the latter prevailed 3-2. Amerja Mc Pherson, Shanya Daniels and Amanda Clarke scored a goal each for the winners, while Gabrielle McCloud and Alicia Jackman scored for Team Ali.
Team Ena Persaud ran riot against Team Mayers, thrashing them 8-2. Lakesha Pearson netted a hat-trick, Tiandi Smith a brace, Shennel Daniels and Teryka Joseph a goal apiece for Team Persaud, while Shamika Marcus netted Team Mayers’s two goals.
Teams Anjuli Beharry-Strande and Evette Bunbury played out an entertaining 2-2 draw. Joanna Archer and Natalie McCloud scored for the Beharry-Strande, while Anastacia Hersham grabbed a brace for Team Bunbury.
Team Nicola Schultz hit four goals past Team Bibi Hassan, who managed only three in reply. Siacy Adams netted a hat-trick for the losing side, while Abioca Heywood with a brace and Amanda McKenzie along with Shanya Daniels scored a goal apiece for the winners.
The girls of Team Christine Jordan waltzed past Team Roseline Clarke 7-2. Lakesha Pearson was outstanding, striking five goals for the victors, while her teammates Teryka Joseph and Abioca Heywood scored a goal each. In reply, Kendre Thomas and Shamika Marcus could only score one goal apiece for the losers.
It was befitting that, at the end of the night, young Lakesha Pearson was named tournament MVP as well as being named tournament top scorer. The best goal keeper was Natalie Nedd.
Some 100 medals with pink ribbons were presented to all players by Sales Representative of NAMILCO, Naseef Khan.
Organizers of the event, the Alex Bunbury Sports and Academics Academy (ABSAA), expressed gratitude to the National Sports Commission, Guyana Football Federation, NAMILCO, the Outdoor Sports & Pet Shop, Metro Office & Computer Supplies, Guyana Cancer Foundation, Leading Edge and other private individuals for supporting a worthy cause.
