Home Letters We cannot keep on reading old scripts of politics
Dear Editor,
To say that I was disillusioned to learn that the current Mayor of Georgetown has put herself up as her party’s candidate yet again for her constituency, would be the understatement of the year.
It is just galling that someone who hung around the City Hall for a quarter of a century, without anything positive to show for it in terms of the development of our capital, would be attempting to return for another three years. Is the party devoid of young, talented and credible individuals? Are they at the bottom of the proverbial barrel?
For some peculiar reason, some politicians seem to have turned the city of Georgetown into their personal estate; a land from where they milk the mostly unsuspecting citizenry dry.
If not, why would the Mayor, without a hint of shame, refuse to leave the ramshackle City Hall to other younger politicians?
These so-called politicians tell all and sundry that politics is a thankless job. They tell the citizenry that the Council never has money and that it is always broke. But surely, there must be something they get from there that causes them to be unable to move beyond the fence of City Hall.
Such old spent politicians are creating a situation where the young generation, and those aspiring to join active politics, begin to believe that politics is a privilege of the few – namely, the old, out of sorts politicians who seem to starve – literally – once they are left out of the fold of ruling political parties.
Not surprisingly, the citizens of Georgetown gain nothing when these recycled politicians are around, just as they miss nothing when they are not around. It renders credence to suggestions that these diehards at the Council are out merely to line their pockets with money, which they earn from hanging around the Council even though they are mentally bankrupt and tired.
Surely, this time around, especially when we see what has been coming out of the current Commission of Inquiry, that the citizens of Georgetown turn the corner, embrace new ideas and stop toying around with politicians who only end up giving the voters a raw deal.
We cannot keep on reading old scripts of politics of the Georgetown Municipality.
Sincerely,
Concerned citizen
