Weeders should act responsibly

Dear Editor,
The letter writer on the irresponsible actions of weeding machine operators (Guyana Times Mar 13), made the point that an elderly gentleman sustained injuries to his shoulder as a result of a weeding exercise and is currently facing life-threatening damages to his shoulder which he has to live with forever. One wonders how life-threatening are the damages if the gentleman can live forever with it?
That aside, the majority of these workers are private people, who give slipshod work to move on to the next job. It seems their mandate is to weed only and nothing else.
I agree this category of workers need some form of regulatory framework to guide their seemingly ad hoc operation, especially if sub-contracted. Of particular note is as it relates to clearing and picking up the cut grass after weeding. Too often areas are left in a poor state after these workers would have weeded. These workers operate without any supervision most times and no one checks on their work and outcome.
The complaints by the writer are real and it seems with no recourse to injuries and damages suffered. These workers should act responsibly in the conduct of their business

Sincerely,
Shamshun Mohamed
