Welder gets 4 years, fined $2M for ganja trafficking
Twenty-seven-year-old Akeem Archer of Zeelugt Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo (EBE), who was on trial for trafficking 2.33kg of Ganja, was on Tuesday found guilty. He was first charged on March 20, 2023, and was remanded to prison by Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus.
He had pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on March 16, he had 2.33 kilograms of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
However, upon appearance before Magistrate Rhondel Weever on Tuesday, he entered a guilty plea and as such, was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment and fined $2 million.
Back in March, the Police told the court that on the day in question, ranks of Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) conducted an operation in the vicinity of Lombard Street, Georgetown, where they intercepted Archer, who was at the time carrying a backpack.
A subsequent search of the said backpack led to the discovery of a parcel containing a quantity of cannabis.
As such, the father of four was arrested and escorted to CANU Headquarters where the ganja was weighed and amounted to 2.33 kg (5lbs) with a street value of $400,000.
After the allegation was put to Archer, he reportedly told investigators that he was at a car wash when a man gave him the bag to take to a motor car.
Archer was released from prison in 2019 after serving a two-year sentence for illegal possession of a firearm.
