West Indies Championship: Rain plays spoilsport on opening day between GHE, WI Academy
The covers were on for most of the day at Providence
Round Three of the West Indies Championship got off to a rainy start for the Guyana Harpy Eagles (GHE) and the West Indies Academy, as intermittent rains throughout the afternoon severely truncated Day 1 of their contest at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
In spite of the rain, Jediah Blades snared three wickets
After hours of on-and-off rain, the heavens finally cleared enough in the late afternoon for the toss, which was won by the hosts GHE, who opted to bat first.
In the absence of Tagenarine Chanderpaul; Raymond Perez and Matthew Nandu took the reins of the opening partnership but it would not be long before Nandu went back to the dugout for one, having his stumps rattled by Jediah Blades’ pace.
Captain Tevin Imlach did not trouble the score much, contributing four runs before becoming the victim of a lbw decision in the 11th over.
Raymond Perez hit GHE’s highest score thus far
Two balls later, Perez, who looked to be off to a good start, became Blades’ second wicket of the day, after hitting 29 in 38 deliveries.
Kemol Savory and Kevlon Anderson, however, would combine for a fruitful partnership that got the Harpy Eagles into the 70s before rain interrupted proceedings once again.
When they were able to resume, the hosts suffered another major blow, losing Anderson for 22 off 31 deliveries.
Another rain delay reared its ugly head, forcing a premature end to the day’s play. At that point, the Harpy Eagles were 87-4 from 25.4 overs. Day 2 will resume at 13:00h today, with Savory and Kevin Sinclair at the crease, unbeaten on 20 and 8 runs respectively.
Blades was the standout bowler for the Academy on Day 1, claiming 3-15 from 7 overs while Johann Layne picked up 1-42 from 11 overs.
The Guyana Harpy Eagles are currently second on the West Indies Championship points table while the West Indies Academy are eighth. After Round 3, the Harpy Eagles will hit the road for the first time in the 2025 season, heading to Sabina Park, Kingston where they will battle hosts Jamaica Scorpions in Round 4.
