2nd T20 World Cup Cricket Tournament for the Blind
West Indies have lost their second straight match in the second T20 World Cup for the Blind in India. After going down to world champions and hosts, India by 142 runs in the first match on Tuesday, the Caribbean side lost by 130 to Sri Lanka on
Wednesday.
In the opening fixture, India were sent in and got to a mammoth 305-5 from their allotment of 20 overs with Deepak Malik (80) and Anis Beig (25) putting on 57 in 5.4 overs to set up the explosive finish. Sunil then took 49 balls to compile 113 with 21 fours. Sunil, a B3 player added 115 for the third wicket with Malik. Guyanese B3 player, Kevin Douglas had a good performance with the ball picking up one for 27 from three overs to be the most economical West Indian bowler. The West Indians gave away 53 extras of which 35 were wides. In reply, the Caribbean unit got 40 from Captain Dennal Shim and an unbeaten 27 from Douglas but were restricted to 163-5 to lose by 142 runs. Guyanese B1 player, Leroy Phillips made 18.
Malik came back to pick up 1-12 (2 overs) and was supported by B2 players Ajay Reddy and Dunna Venkatesh with 1-14 each.
On Wednesday, the West Indians woes continued with another heavy defeat this time to Sri Lanka who put on 281-2 from their 20 overs. B3 players, Chandana Deshapriya (108 not out) and Suranga Sampath (116 not out) put on an unbroken 247-run partnership for the third wicket after Sri Lanka were reduced to 34-2 in the fourth over. B1 player, Ganesh Singh and Douglas bowled four overs each but failed to get among the wickets and stop the run-flow with only Gregory Stewart (1-31) tasting success.
The run chase never really got going and West Indies eventually got to 151-8 falling short by 130 runs. Phillips top scored with 44 batting at number three while Kevin Douglas made 20. The pick of the Sri Lankans bowlers was Dinesh Sekage with 2-20 from his four overs.
Pakistan lead the 10-team tournament with nine points from three wins while Sri Lanka, India, Australia and Bangladesh have six points and England three. Nepal, West Indies and New Zealand are yet to register any points.
West Indies will play Bangladesh today in Delhi in search for their first points to keep their hopes of advancing further in the tournament alive.
