Located at 43 Robb Street, between Wellington and Camp Streets, the West Indies Sports Complex has been in existence for over four decades, and yesterday became the first entity to make a contribution to the ‘Cricket gears for young and promising cricketers in Guyana’ project, which has been endorsed by the GCB and organised by Anil Beharry and Kishan Das of the USA.
Owned by the late Feroze Khan, a former Everest First-Division cricketer, and now run by his two sons Imran and Javeed, the popular sports store has donated four junior bats and four pairs of junior batting pads to the project.
Yesterday’s donation was organised by former Berbice and Guyana off-spinner Sean Devers, who is now a cricket commentator and sports journalist with Kaieteur News.
The donation was presented by WISC cashier Rafeena Ganie to Anil Beharry, a former BCB president and Berbice cricketer, on behalf of the Khan siblings.
Beharry, a technocrat with responsibility for Good Governance, Marketing and Finance of the GCB, provided a brief background of the “CRICKET GEARS FOR YOUNG AND PROMISING CRICKETERS IN GUYANA” project.
“With my recent (calling) on the GCB, I feel compelled to further the cause of cricket in Guyana, young cricketers in particular. This project is done in collaboration with Kishan Das of the USA, and will target young, talented cricketers in need of assistance with cricket gears. I will go…the length and breadth of Guyana to do talent spotting, and will also be guided by cricket club leaders to identify young interested talent,” Beharry has said.
“Persons who wish to contribute new and used cricket gear are free to make contact with me and Kishan of the USA on +1718 664 0896 to make your donation. I can assure you that accountability will be at the highest level. Let’s join together to provide opportunities to our young cricketers and keep them away from idleness, drugs and crime,” he declared.
