Western Tigers, Police to battle for Mayor’s Cup

Two of the most destructive teams in the 2016 edition of the Mayor’s Cup advanced to the finals after

convincing victories in the semi-finals played at the Victoria Ground on the East Coast of Demerara on Sunday night.

When the dust was settled at the end of the exciting double header it was Western Tigers and Police Football Club that were left standing.

The Georgetown based Western Tigers dismantled a hapless Ann’s Grove of the East Coast of Demerara 4-1 while Police Football Club (FC) defeated the lone Linden team, Federal Winners Connection 3-1.

Darren Benjamin was the first to find the back of the nets for Western Tigers when he beat the Ann’s Grove goal keeper in the 29th minute.

Dwayne McLennon produced a blinder in the 34th minute but Phillip Williams secured the lone goal for Ann’s Grove eight minutes later.

Randolph Wagner and Dellon Kelly produced the final assault in the 84th and 90th minutes respectively to end Ann’s Grove’s chance of lifting the title.

In the second match up, Police FC delivered a 3-1 win over Federal Winners Connection with Quincy Holder scoring in the 14th minute of play. Dwayne Charles scored the second for the Police FC in the 48th minute and Travis Jones registered Police’s third in the 60th minute.

Keon Sears scored a consolation goal two minutes before the final whistle.

The final will be played on Sunday, September 11 at the Den Amstel Ground, West Coast Demerara beginning at 19:00h with the third place play-off followed by the championship match beginning at 21:00h.

The champion team will claim the top prize of $700,000 and a trophy donated by Aruwai Resort while the second placed team will walk away with $300,000 and the Ansa McAl trophy.

Ann’s Grove and Federal Winners Connection will contest the third place play-off with the winning team set to cart off $200,000 and the John Fernandes trophy while the losing team will pocket $100,000 and the Ministry of State trophy.

Ricks and Sari has also donated hampers which will go to the winning team, while tournament’s top goal scorer will get a three piece suite compliments of AH&L Kissoon Furniture Store.

Top Brandz Distributors of Broad and High Streets, distributors of Interstate vehicle batteries, is among the key sponsors on board assisting the tournament. Aruwai Resort of the Essequibo River is also another main supporter of this year’s event and tournament coordinator Lennox Arthur has expressed thanks to all the sponsors.

Other support for the annual event also came from Ansa McAl, Minister of State Joe Harmon and his ministry, John Fernandes, Ricks and Sari and AH&L Kissoon.
