Wheelchair-bound man arrested for breaking into car

…cutlass, knife found in his possession

One man is now in the lock-ups after being caught with a cutlass and a knife in his possession at New Market Street, Georgetown, along with articles that were stolen from a motorcar that had been parked a short distance away from where he was arrested.
Reports are that the man was arrested shortly after noon on Sunday while he was pushing a wheelchair through the streets of Georgetown.
Commander of Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) Sub-division A, Edgar Thomas confirmed that the man is in Police custody after a police patrol in the New Market Street area observed him with the weapons.
“He had a cutlass and a knife and was actually involved in stealing some articles from motorcar at Thomas and Lamaha streets, the vehicle was parked there and he was arrested not too far away. He was arrested and found with a cutlass and a kitchen knife.”
It is believed that the suspect would have previously used the wheelchair under the pretence of being differently-abled to solicit funds and items from passersby in various areas.
According to the Commander, there is a possibility that he could have pretended to have been injured or suffering from a disability as his modus operandi (MO) in executing crimes.
However, at this point, investigators are currently investigating the matter of the motor vehicle which was broken into, and items stolen along Thomas and Lamaha Streets.
