Wilson confident Trojans will perform well in Trinidad
Upcoming basketball match between UG Trojans, UWI Team…
The basketball team of the University of Guyana, the UG Trojans, are scheduled to travel to the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago to engage their counterparts of the University of the West Indies (UWI) in a series of games.
Trojans coach Warren Wilson is optimistic about what the future holds for his team, even though it has experienced varied fortunes in its pre-season encounters against the Eagles basketball team, losing 2-1 in the U21 encounters but triumphing 2-1 in the seniors’ series.
Declaring himself proud of the team’s performance, and describing the results as the harvest of hard work invested in training, Wilson has said there is still much work to be done in preparing the U21 side, but he is confident the teams are moving in the right direction.
He told this publication in a recent chat: “As I said last year, we did some extensive work on (the U21 team’s) ability to cope with teams that ran hard against them. We did some tweaking in our areas of defense. I have noticed an improvement in our defensive end, and it is my belief that this improvement has helped us with our offense.
“For the next couple of weeks, we will be working on cohesiveness; because, even though we won, the pressure was always on one or two persons who carried the game. If we (had faced) a top team, they would have easily (discerned this flaw) and restricted us.”
Wilson also explained that the U21 team is relatively new and is still figuratively trying to find its feet. He said he had noticed the chemistry to bond team members was lacking in their encounters with other teams, but he said the experience they gained would allow them to perform better in the future.
Wilson expressed confidence that team members would be more focused in their upcoming matches against the Pepsi Sonics and the Plaisance Guardians. This exposure, he believes, would give the team the much-needed experience that should stand them in good stead when they travel to Trinidad to battle against the University of the West Indies’ Basketball Team.
