Windies Women need to apply batting to reap positive results, says King
After a 42-run defeat against England Women in the second Vitality T20 International at Northampton on Friday last, a disappointed Stacy Ann King, Windies all-rounder, spoke to Cricket West Indies (CWI) media.
Crestfallen with the result, King, who top-scored for the Caribbean team with a shot-filled 43 from 34 balls, reflected on her top innings. She said she had backed herself and played to her strengths.
“I knew they would come short at me, and batting out of the crease helped, with the wicket-keeper standing away from the stumps”, King detailed.
The Trinidadian, who returned to the West Indies Women’s team on the tour against Ireland, gained promotion to number three, and it proved a good move.
“I just targeted those vacant areas to give my team a quick start, because we were chasing a mammoth target”, King explained. She lamented the poor batting, and called for team mates to “step up” with the bat.
“We have been doing the right things in training, but it’s just that we are not applying ourselves in games, and it’s costing us”, King stated.
This tour has been an ordinary one for the Stafanie Taylor-led West Indies Women, who have been outplayed in every department. With one match thus far washed out, the teams have since played three One Day matches and one T20. No player from the West Indies has surpassed 100 runs in those four innings.
Chedean Nation has 98 runs, and that is the most scored by any member of the Caribbean team. This is followed by King, who has 69 runs in her three innings. In the bowling department, Hayley Matthews has eight wickets and Afy Fletcher has seven wickets, leading the bowling charts in both series thus far.
West Indies Women will conclude their tour of England when they meet the hosts for the final Vitality T20 International on Tuesday June 25, 2019. This match will be played from 14:00h local time, and will bowl off at the County Ground in Derby.
Looking ahead, King said Derby is an unfamiliar venue for the visiting West Indies team. With an aim to sign off the series with a consolation win, King has admonished the batters to bring their ‘A’ game to the final match.
