Winston Missigher takes Golden Mile in 4:33

Winston Missigher continued his dominance in road racing by blazing the field to capture the inaugural Professional Key Shop and Windjammer Hotel & Cuisine sponsored “Golden Mile” road race 2016.
The race which coincided with Guyana’s Golden Jubilee of Independence celebrations ran off yesterday at16:40 hrs outside of the 704 Sports Bar and proceeded west along Lamaha Street then south into the eastern carriageway of Carmichael Street and finished in front of the Professional Key Shop/Oasis Café building.
Under cool conditions, ideal for running Missigher outpaced the 50 other competitors to complete the one mile course in 4 minutes and 33 seconds comfortably ahead second place finisher Cleveland Thomas (4:37). Missigher described the race as being very hard “the race started very hard which didn’t suit me since I’m nursing a slight hamstring injury and I prefer to build then run hard,” said Missigher.
The event was well attended and participants were recognized in various categories. Phillip Beckels (80 years) and Carmilita James-Wright were recognized as the eldest male and female competitors while 10 year old Kcaysha Medas-King who resides in the United States of America received a trophy for being the youngest runner.
Eighteen year old Anfernee Headecker (4:45) won the male junior category crossing the line third overall while sixteen year old Claudrice Mckoy (5:39) was the first female to cross the line coming in nineteenth overall.
Surinamese Guillermo Udenhout (5:05) was the first male master to cross the line and C. Phillips won the female masters category in 6 minutes and 45 seconds.
Organizers of the event Kwame Rigby and Carey Griffith described the event as successful and promised to not only make the event an annual one but to have similar events on a more regular basis especially on national holidays while hinting at the upcoming emancipation day.
A pleased President of the Athletics Association of Guyana, (AAG) Aubrey Hutson who was present at the event assisted with the presentation of prizes.
