The prosecution is contending that Khan, her husband Dhaniram Seewah, and Singh, called “Lusty”, were consuming alcohol at the couple’s home at Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara.
At the time, she was seated in a hammock cutting up “seasoning” with a knife. Sometime after, Khan and her spouse got into an argument since he refused to get her water. As a result, she used the knife to cut him to his upper body. In retaliation, Khan’s husband took a window frame and used it to hit her on the foot. The argument between them continued and Singh attempted to take the knife from Khan. Instead, Khan stabbed Singh. Her husband took the knife from her and threw it into the yard. According to the prosecution’s case, Singh went downstairs without telling anyone about the wound and he remained there. He asked for some sugar water to drink, which he was 0given. He stayed at the bottom of the house on some wooden pallets. He later died.
According to Justice Barlow, a term of imprisonment of between 10 and 12 years was suited in this case.
The Judge started Khan’s sentence at the lower end of 10 years. From there, she ordered that the prison deduct one-third of that for the woman’s early guilty plea and another six months for her showing remorse. Other deductions were ordered to be made for the time Khan spent in pretrial custody.
Khan will be informed of her overall sentence by the prison. She was represented by Attorney-at-Law Latchmie Rahamat, while State Counsel Teriq Mohammed appeared for the prosecution.
