A woman has been arrested after she tried to sneak a quantity of ganja into the Lusignan Prison, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
Reports are that the incident occurred at about 12:30h on Thursday, when
a rank of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) was on duty at the self-support reception desk at the prison.
The narcotic that was found in the deodorant
The 25-year-old woman, of Archer Street, Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo, had gone to the prison to drop off some items. Guyana Times understands that the woman presented a black plastic bag to the Police rank, and a search conducted on the said bag found three deodorants.
Upon further checking, a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis were found hidden at the bottom of the deodorant bottles.
The woman was told of the offence, cautioned, arrested and then taken to the Vigilance Police Station, where the narcotics, when weighed, amounted to 25 grams.
She remains in custody, pending charges.
Over the years, several persons have smuggled, and continue to smuggle, narcotics into local prisons. Recently, a 23-year-old woman was arrested after she attempted to smuggle a quantity of ganja into the New Amsterdam Prison in two papayas.
The narcotic that was found in the deodorant
It was reported that that suspect had visited the facility to take food for an inmate. A search had to be conducted on the food brought, and the ganja, concealed in five parcels wrapped in transparent plastic, was found hidden in two papayas.
The suspect was told of the offence committed, cautioned and arrested, and the matter was reported to the Police at Central Police Station, where the suspected narcotic was handed over.
The cannabis, when weighed in the presence of the suspect, amounted to 192 grams. (G9)
