Woman killed, 2 injured after drunken driver crashes into concrete culvert

One woman is now dead while two others are injured after the car in which they were travelling crashed into a utility pole at the Hand-en-Veldt Public Road, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD), in the wee hours of Monday.
The dead woman has been identified as 44-year-old Shazie Hoosain of Green Field, ECD. Injured are the driver of the motor car, 22-year-old Saif Arjune, and a 16-year-old boy. At the time of the accident, a 19-year-old was also an occupant of the motor vehicle.
Based on reports received, the motor car, PJJ 485, driven by Arjune, was proceeding along the Hand-en-Veldt Public Road allegedly at a fast rate of speed, when he lost control and crashed into a utility pole after which the car slammed into a concrete culvert.
As a result of the impact, the driver and other occupants sustained injuries about their bodies. Police ranks who responded reportedly pulled the injured persons from the wreckage and took them to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital where Hoosain was pronounced dead on arrival.
Arjune and the teenager suffered broken right legs and were subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where they were admitted. Following the accident, a breathalyser test was administered on the driver and the results proved that he was over the legal limit of alcohol consumption.
Hoosain’s body was taken to the Jerrick’s Funeral Home awaiting post-mortem.
