Police in Berbice have arrested a woman, who attempted to smuggle marijuana in tennis rolls into the New Amsterdam Prison on Wednesday.
According to prison officials, the incident occurred around 12:00h. Reports are the 29-year-old woman of Dispensary Dam, Ankerville, Port Mourant, Berbice, went to the prison to take self-support items for her relative, Bilall McLeanon, who is currently on remand at the New Amsterdam Prison for murder.
During a search of the items, a prison officer unearthed a number of small transparent plastic bags, which contained the prohibited items, tucked away in several tennis rolls.
“The plastic bags with the prohibited items were removed and weighed. The items amounted to 11 grams. The suspect is in Police custody,” prison officials said.
Just over a week ago, a convicted prisoner, who is serving time at the Mazaruni Prison, was found with 1472 grams (1.47 kilogram) of cannabis after he was searched by a prison officer.
Reports are a prison guard patrolling the inner perimeter of the penitentiary noticed the prisoner acting in a suspicious manner. At the time, the inmate was in possession of a plastic bucket.
However, upon seeing the officer, the prisoner began running. He was chased and was apprehended. The bucket was checked, and the cannabis was discovered. (G9)
