Woman robbed after buying groceries

A 49-year-old woman was robbed on Friday morning, shortly after she exited a supermarket at Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara.
The incident occurred at about 09:45h, just moments after Nirmala Seeram exited the Good Life Supermarket.
Seeram related that she had just purchased groceries and was walking in the direction of Plantain Walk to go home. The suspect, who was wearing a black facemask, approached her from behind and held her at knifepoint.
“I just collect the bag and come out the supermarket. I does always walk back home cause it’s right down there…Like I hear a voice behind and when I turn around, he had a black knife…He ask me what’s in the bag and I tell he that it’s just goods and bleach. And then he said to give he my other purse,” she recalled.
Before she could hand it over, the suspect snatched her purse, leaving the grocery bag at the corner of the roadway. The woman was wearing two gold rings, which were also taken. The perpetrator then entered a dark blue getaway car and made good his escape.
“I had on my ring and he said give me before I kill you. So I take them off and give him. It was my wedding ring and another gold ring…After that, the same car that was about couple building down the road reverse and he jump in,” a distraught Seeram explained.
The woman said she had about $7000 in her purse and a phone valued at $24,000. She indicated her intentions of filing a police report. Persons from the area who rushed to the woman’s aid informed this publication that there have been many petty robberies around the area, especially with motorcycle bandits.
Just a few days ago, someone also attempted to break into a house but was thwarted after neighbours heard noises and raised an alarm. The community is bordered by Vreed-en-Hoop – a prime business hub in the region and houses the ferry service to Georgetown. Many robberies have also been reported at the stelling, despite police presence. (G12)
