Woman struck down, killed by speeding pick-up in Lethem

A mother of three tragically lost her life on Friday afternoon after being struck down by a speeding vehicle while crossing a public road in Lethem, Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo).
Dead is 48-year-old Shammell Lovena Lindie, also known as “Aunty Shammell” or “Dumb Girl”, of Lot 48 Culvert City, Lethem.
The accident occurred around 12:30h as the woman, who was living with a disability that affected her speech and hearing, was crossing the Lethem Public Road, a routine she had performed countless times.
Witnesses described the shock as the pickup truck, driven by a young persons, collided with the woman, dragging her some distance away and resulting in fatal injuries. Despite swift efforts by bystanders to assist, Lindie tragically succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
In an interview with the woman’s sister, Sandra Lindie, on Friday afternoon, she revealed that her sister did odd jobs for a living. Sandra mentioned that her sister had stopped at a restaurant nearby for a break and was on her way to a family member’s business when the speeding vehicle struck her down.
“The car was going at a high speed, and when it hit her, it dragged her a considerable distance from where she was hit. After the collision, the driver fled the scene, but a bystander chased him down, leading to his arrest,” Sandra recounted.
She expressed shock over her sister’s sudden and untimely death, emphasising that she was well-known in the community. Her family is demanding justice for the loss of their loved one.
As investigations into the accident continue, authorities are urging both motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution and adhere to road safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future. (G9)
