Woman struck, killed by speeding car

A mother of one lost her life on Saturday afternoon after she was struck by an allegedly drunk driver at Parika, on the East Bank of Essequibo (EBE).
Dead is 48-year-old Ekene Rogers.
According to Police reports, the incident occurred at about 13:00h. Rogers, who worked at a supermarket, was standing along the roadside waiting to board a minibus.
However, the motor car driver was allegedly speeding at the time when he lost control of the vehicle and slammed into Rogers. She was immediately picked up and rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where doctors on duty tried to save her life.
Owing to complications, a decision was made to transfer her to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where she died en route. This publication understands that the woman suffered several broken bones, including her two legs.
The driver was later taken into custody where a breathalyser test revealed that he was above the legal consumption limit. As such, he is assisting with the investigations.
Rogers is one of two women who were struck down over the weekend in separate accidents. On, Sunday, 61-year-old Bibi Zalima Subrattie was struck and killed on the East Coast of Demerara.
Reports received revealed that the car that was involved in the accident was driven by a Special Constabulary officer.
According to information reaching Guyana Times, the accident occurred at about 18:15h and involved motor car bearing registration number PKK 9991.
The car was reportedly driving along the Chateau Margot Public Road and suddenly changed lanes to overtake another vehicle but instead, it came into contact with the woman, who was attempting to cross the highway.
