Women’s CG Insurance Super50 Cup: Barbados demolish Windward Islands

…but Matthews misses century

In this match, played in Guyana at the National Stadium at Providence, EBD, Barbados won the toss and opted to bat first. They posted 227-2 in 50 overs, with Hayley Matthews and Kycia Knight adding 177 runs for the opening wicket.

It was heartbreak for Matthews as she fell for 99

The duo looked comfortable hitting the odd boundaries and picking up the ones and twos, until Kycia Knight was dismissed for 72 from 108 balls. Her innings included seven fours.
Matthews, who finished as the leading run-scorer in the recent T20 Blaze, looked at her classy best as she made 99 runs from 133 balls. She was heartbroken when Pearl Etienne trapped her at the crease, removing her after 43.1 overs, and with Barbados on 192-2.
Kycia Knight’s sister Kyshona made an unbeaten 27 runs from 35 balls in an innings that included three fours, and Alisa Scantlebury chipped in with ten as Barbados batted all 50 overs and scored 227 runs on a slow wicket.

Jannillea Glasgow and Pearl Etienne each took one wicket for the Windward Islands, whose batting, in response, looked thin as the Bajan seamers Shanika Bruce and Shamilia Connell created early inroads. Connell rocked the stumps of Malika Edward for one, while Bruce sent Kimone Homer packing for a duck.
Bruce and Connell continued to chip away at the Windward Islands’ resistance. Connell, the faster of the two seamers, struck Qiana Joseph with a short-ball, causing her to fall on her stumps and be given out for one, hit wicket.
At the end of ten overs, Windward Islands were 23-6, at which time Connell, fielding on the boundary, suffered an illness and had to be stretchered off the field. At the drinks break, Windward Islands were 41-7, with Glasgow being sent back for 11 to become Bruce’s fourth victim.
In the end, Barbados demolished the Windward Islands by 149 runs.
