Guyana’s elite Women’s footballers will be back in action from this Friday

Ten Clubs from around the country, comprising Elite Women’s and Regional Association teams, will compete for a $1M grand prize for the second consecutive year in the League’s history.
Defending champions, Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Football club, Guyana Police Force (GPF) FC, Fruta Conquerors FC, Santos FC, Monedderlust FC, Ann’s Grove United FC, Den Amstel FC, Western Tigers FC, River’s View FC and newcomers Potaro Strikers FC will be embroiled in battle over the 6- month competition.
The 2026/ 27 version of the Women’s League will employ a 9v9 format, with the pitch stretching from the top of one 18- yard box to the other. Further, Women’s Division 1 games will be hosted strictly on Wednesday’s and Friday’s.
The fresh season of the League provides a new opportunity for the country’s female players to showcase their immense skills in a highly competitive environment. This idea was further emphasised by GFF President Wayne Forde.
President Forde shared in an invited comment, “The launch of our second GFF Women’s Division One League is another important step in our commitment to advancing women’s football in Guyana. Designed in line with FIFA benchmarks and guidelines, this six-month competition, featuring at least 90 matches, will provide our players with the competitive experience and development opportunities needed to reach their full potential.”
“I encourage our players to embrace this opportunity with confidence, discipline and determination. Believe in your abilities, challenge yourselves and make the most of every opportunity to grow.”
“Our vision extends well beyond the pitch. We are committed to ensuring that more girls and women have equitable access to football, educational opportunities, scholarships and pathways to personal development. Through sustained investment, the GFF will continue to strengthen women’s football and make the game a vehicle for opportunity, empowerment and positive change across Guyana,” President Forde concluded.
In another ground- breaking move, each team in the Women’s Division 1 League has been provided with a $100,000 preparation grant.
The League’s initial phase will see each team playing each other once; amounting to nine games per team. That league phase will run from Friday, October 23, 2026 to February 12, 2027.
Then the second phase, set to commence on Friday, February 26, will see teams finishing 1-5 in the league phase being sorted into Tier 2 while teams finishing 6-10 are placed in Tier 2. The teams in both tiers will play each other twice in the second phase of the competition.
Tier 1 will compete for positions 1-5 and corresponding cash prizes of $1,000,000, $500,000, $300,000, $200,000 and $150,000. On the other hand, Tier 2 teams will be competing for positions 6-10.
While the other five teams receive a $75,000 reward for their efforts; the Tier 2 winners will cart of $125,000.
