Women’s group completes 1st Essequibo kayaking expedition

A group of women on Tuesday completed the first-ever kayaking expedition journeying from the source of the Essequibo River to the river mouth.
Commencing two months ago on February 2, 2018, the expedition lasted some 75 days.
It was headed by Laura Bingham, while hailing from the United Kingdom and Ireland were her two companions, Ness Knight and Pip Stewart.
With a combination of both hard and soft adventure experiences, the group was able to enjoy the awe-inspiring vast landscapes of Guyana – waterways, rain forests, savannahs and mountain ranges.
The expedition included a visit to the Indigenous community of Konashen with the team also passing through Fairview, Apoteri and Iwokrama. The journey provided excellent exposure for Destination Guyana, with a great focus on community tourism and Guyana’s waterways.
Some of the highlights of the journey included the warm hospitality of the Indigenous communities along the River, especially the Wai Wai who were the main guides for the almost two-and-a-half-month journey, as well as the pristine nature of the rainforest and the wildlife.
The team was accompanied by Faye James of King William Adventures, as well as Wai Wai guides Romel and Anthony.
