Wong secures spot in ITTF Pan American Championships

Miguel Wong is having a dream year, and confirmation was made on Wednesday morning that he has qualified for the 2021 International Table Tennis Federation’s (ITTF’s) Senior Pan American Championships.
Earlier this year, Wong had qualified for the Junior Pan American Games in November, the first of its kind for the junior group; now his qualification in the big leagues is only the icing on the cake for the 20-year-old.
Wong has been listed by the ITTF as a competitor for the Caribbean Region in the Pan am Games, which are scheduled for November 13-19, 2021.
In a comment invited by Guyana Times Sport, Wong shared that it is a major accomplishment to have qualified for both of the events within the same year.
“It’s just a very, very great feeling to be able to qualify for not one, but two Pan American Championships. One being the first ever Junior Pan Am Games and the second being the Senior Pan American Championships,” the Table tennis player stated.
When asked about his expectations, the youngster noted that he is hoping to make Guyana proud.
Wong stated, “I’m just very elated and so anxious to be able to play for Guyana again on the international circuit. And hopefully, I will put my best foot forward and we’ll see how it goes.”
Aside from Wong’s Men’s singles’ qualification, Guyana has been named among the qualifiers for a team event. the women’s team has made the cut, while the men are listed as the first reserve team for the Caribbean group. Guyana’s men will be able to break into the competition on the premise of an already qualified team does not confirm its participation before a deadline. Their failure to do such would result in the reserve teams being invited to compete.
The Pan Am Championships will be hosted at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. The Junior Pan Am Games are calendared for November 25- December 5 in Cali, Colombia.
Meanwhile, Wong still has plans to get in some international training before he heads to competition. Earlier this week, the Guyana Committee of Services became the latest entity to get on board with Wong’s vision. The charitable organisation has been in the habit of assisting athletes from various sporting disciplines in one way or another.
