Wounding accused on $70,000 bail

A Haslington, East Coast Demerara (ECD) man was on Tuesday released on ,000 bail when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan to answer to a charge of unlawful wounding.

Cleon David, 30, is accused of unlawfully wounding Melrose Hernandez with a pair of scissors on January 20, at Araka Landing Mazaruni, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni).

The court was told that David is a dredge owner in the Cuyuni-Mazaruni region and a father of two. The court also heard that on the day of the incident, the accused was accosted by two Brazilian men and he grabbed the tool from the Virtual Complainant (VC) for the purpose of defending himself, wounding the woman to the waist in the process. As condition for bail, the Chief Magistrate ordered that the accused stay 50 feet away from the VC until the completion of the trial. The case will continue on February 10 at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
