Wynter re-elected unopposed

Mayoral elections

Kirt Wynter was re-elected unopposed as Mayor of New Amsterdam when the Town Council held its mayoral elections in the council chambers on Wednesday.
Wynter, who was appointed as Mayor in March 2015, was the only nominee for the post and received all 13 votes at the elections, which also saw Winifred Haywood being re-elected as Deputy Mayor.

In thanking the Council for the confidence it showed in him, Mayor Wynter said the Council was still to deliver after eight months. “We have not given the residents what we want to give them,” he said.
However, the Mayor outlined new measures to be put in place from January 1, which would likely result in improvements to the town’s aesthetics. “I would like the public to know that we are not satisfied with the services that we are providing. We are trying to get a portable pump like those the rice farmers use to put at some of the kokers so that when the rains come, we can ease some of the flooding…”
Wynter also made reference to downtown New Amsterdam, which many businesses have been using to dispose of their solid waste, saying litterbugs would be fined when the new year commenced. “One of the things we will be implementing from January 1st is fines for littering,” the Mayor stated.
He said the fines would be $10,000. “These are some of the things that we have to deal with: littering, illegal dumping in the alleyways; yes, we received a system that was in the gutters, we tried to build it; we are building it; we can’t fulfil all your requirements, but we are trying. If we can’t pick up your garbage, we are asking you to burn it…”

Meanwhile, Deputy Mayor Haywood said there were many challenges facing the Council especially in the areas of solid waste management and clearing lots. She said as such the Council would be informing residents of whatever difficulties it may experience as it endeavoured to carry out its mandate.
Her comments came in response to former Mayor Barbra Pilgrim asking the Council to be more transparent in its doings.
