Anthony Xavier came from behind to beat Gowkarran Mangra in the final of the Caribbean Beat Restaurant and Bar Mashramani Pool competition on Sunday to walk away with the Carib Beer Trophy and $60,000 first prize.
In the competition that attracted a large pool of 63 players was played using the Straight-Pool format on a straight knock out basis with only the final being two-best out of three.
In the final, Mangra who is also known as “Sunil” and “Mahaica Man” won the first game to put pressure on Xavier who responded by winning the second game easily.
With the series locked 1-1, Xavier saved his best for last to stun the crowd favourite Mangra to walk way the champion.
In addition to winning many hearts and fans, “Mahaica Man” won the V-Net Trophy and $40,000 for finishing second.
Other prize winners are Richard Sewnarine also known as Smallie who finished third and took away $20,000 and the Elegance Jewellery and Pawn Shop Trophy and Sean DeSouza won the Ariel Enterprise Trophy and $10,000 for finishing fourth.
Proprietor of Caribbean Beat Restaurant and Bar, Andre “Butcher” Boyce said he was pleased with the support and thanked the players, sponsors and fans for the support. Boyce told Guyana Times Sport that another competition is in the planning stages and will make the grand announcement as soon as all the details are finalized.
