Youth leaders complete training ahead of National Expedition

More than 400 young persons from communities across Guyana are expected to benefit from the upcoming National Expedition Programme following the successful completion of a pre-expedition training exercise conducted by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.
The training, organised through the Ministry’s Department of Youth and the President’s Youth Award Republic of Guyana (PYARG) Medal of Service Programme, was held at the Kuru Kuru Training Centre (KKTC) along the Linden-Soesdyke Highway from June 19 to 21, 2026.
According to the Ministry in a social media post, the exercise is part of preparations for the National Expedition Programme, which is scheduled to engage youths from across the country at the end of June.
Activities began with a four-mile hike from Umbrella Resort to the training centre, a journey that took approximately two and a half hours. Upon arrival, more than 90 youth leaders were divided into groups and participated in a series of activities aimed at strengthening leadership, teamwork and survival skills.
Training sessions started as early as 05:00h and continued until near midnight each day. Participants received instruction in campcraft, basic survival techniques, watermanship and water safety, wilderness first aid, physical fitness, expedition conduct, navigation and leadership development.
According to the Ministry, the programme was designed to teach, reinforce and assess key life skills, including time management, self-discipline, leadership, conflict resolution, analytical thinking, dexterity, first aid, campcraft, watermanship, and navigation.
The training also sought to provide youth leaders with the practical and theoretical knowledge required to effectively manage national expeditions, familiarise them with environmental conditions and challenges associated with expedition activities, and promote greater unity, teamwork and interdependence among participants.
The Culture, Youth and Sport Ministry said it remains committed to expanding the PYARG Medal of Service Programme and providing opportunities that support personal development and leadership among young people across Guyana.
