Director of Sport praise national U-15 footballers on historic win

Following Guyana’s Junior Jaguars’ historic win in St Martin at the U-15 Squaliga Tournament, Director of Sport, Christopher Jones and Commissioners of the National Sports Commission (NSC) extended congratulations to the Guyana National Under-15 football team on their success.

In a statement to the media, the NSC noted, “The Guyana Football Federation must be complemented on their robust grassroots programme which continues to develop our young and talented players. At this time all Guyana stands proud of our young champions!”
The Junior Jaguars defeated St Martin 1-0 via a Jeremy Garrett strike to continue their fine form in the tournament.
In the build-up to the final, the U-15 footballers had defeated Dominica 1-0 via an Omari Glasgow goal to secure a spot in the final while wins also came against British Virgin Islands where they won 5-0 thanks to Orville Hinds, Ronaldo Rodrigues, Tyrel Khan, Ken Salvador and Omari Glasgow.  Against Martinque, Troni Semple made the 1-0 win possible.
However, their other two matches were goalless draws against Guadeloupe and Barbados.
Prior to the team’s departure, Head Coach Bryan Joseph told Guyana Times Sport that given the performances in French Guiana last December and the constant camps, he thought the side had a very good chance of reaching the semi-finals or even the finals. Likewise, the skipper, Joshua Braithwaite, had expressed similar optimism over his team’s chances in the tournament. “I expect the team to win this time as we’ve been together for a long time. This is the fourth camp that the national programme has had for us and I think this time, we won’t be having any excuse; I think we should win this time.”
The skipper said it was a great feeling to lead the national team, as it gave him a chance to “lead from the front” and fulfil “one of his goals”.
