EBE trio remanded after robbery spree

Three men, all of the East Bank of Essequibo, were sent back to jail by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan when they appeared before her charged with the offence of robbery under arms.

Calvin Reid, Raymond Reid, and Leron Blaize, of Salem, East Bank Essequibo, all denied the allegation.

It is alleged that on March 24, 2016 at Arrow Mountaintop, Essequibo, while being armed with a gun, they robbed Carlotta Harris of one yellow metal chain valued $50,000, a yellow metal ring valued $40,000, yellow metal earrings valued $30,000 and one cellphone valued $80,000, a total value of $200,000.

The second charge against them read that at the same day at the same location, they robbed Gavin Andrews of three pennyweights of raw gold valued $30,000, and one G-Shock watch valued $30,000, a total value of $60,000. And the final charge stated that on the same day at the same location, they robbed Caleb Trim of a Stephen shotgun valued $150,000, 4 ounces and 5 pennyweights of raw gold valued $1.1 million, a pair of long boots valued $4000 and one torch light.

Raymond, 25, and Calvin, 24, who are brothers, were both represented by legal counsel.

The Attorney told the court that the number one accused, Raymond, a part-time miner and basket maker for his family business, was not at home when Police Officers visited his home to arrest him. She explained that upon his return, he was told of what had transpired and reported to the Police Station where he was arrested and charged with the present offence. The number two accused, Calvin, denied any involvement in the charge brought against him.

Blaize, 27, who was unrepresented, told the court that he had been living in the interior for the last four years.

Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers opposed to bail owing to the gravity of the offence.

He told the court that the number two accused was presently on remand for possession of narcotics.

Blaize is also charged with a similar offence and was also on remand.

He further stated that the Reid brothers were both employed by Trim, one of the Virtual Complainants (VCs), during the time of the robbery. As such, bail was denied and all defendants were remanded to prison to return to the Kaikan Magistrate’s Court on March 21, 2017.
