National Diya to be lit on October 15

As Guyanese prepare to celebrate the Festival of Lights, plans are moving apace for the lighting of the National Diya, which symbolises the commencement of the sacred festival. This is the third year the National Diya is being lit at Rahaman’s Park, Greater Georgetown.
The event is organised by the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh, also called the Hindus for Selfless Service, and it set for Sunday, October 15. The evening will see a huge Diya being paced on an elevated platform and will be illuminated during the evening.
At the special ceremony planned to mark the occasion, Hindus priests and other officials from the Government, the diplomatic corps, the Opposition and members of various organisations are expected to congregate for an evening of music and reflection.
Apart from the messages of peace and harmony by top officials of the organisation, there will be dances and skits to portray the significance of the national holiday. In addition, members of the Caribbean Hotshot Band will perform live. Sound will be provided by the Sniper Sound System.
