– 10 new cases detected in 24 hours
The Health Ministry on Monday announced another COVID-19 death, thus taking the total number of fatalities to 135.
The latest death is an 80-year-old female from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica). She died while receiving care at a medical facility.
Prior to her death, a 58-year-old male from the same region succumbed at a medical facility.
However, 10 new cases were detected over a 24-hour period, raising the total positives thus far to 4524. This includes 2374 males and 2150 females.
There are eight persons in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), with 69 in institutional isolation, 757 in home isolation and 47 in institutional quarantine. The country has also seen 3549 recoveries – 23 of which were reported in one day.
Of the 10 new cases, one was detected in Region One (Barima-Waini); one in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) and eight in Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica).
The number of positives remained constant in the other regions, which stood at 91 in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), 33 in Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice), 79 in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), 382 in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), 143 in Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni), 376 in Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) and 151 in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice).
For the past months, the PPP/C Government has initiated a massive testing drive to ensure that all positive cases, especially asymptomatic cases, are detected. This has resulted in a high number of cases being detected, bringing some hotspots under control.
A few weeks ago, they had launched a massive campaign titled Operation COVI-CURB, aimed at sensitisation, through collaboration with the Joint Services. Officials say that it has seen successes as they continue to address the myths associated with the virus and enable compliance with the measures to keep themselves and others safe.
Guyanese are reminded to observe the protocols of the COVID-19 Emergency Measures (No 10), which are in effect until November 31, 2020.
This order emphasised, among other measures, the need for correct and consistent use of a face mask when leaving home; the importance of maintaining the six feet physical distance from others; and the need for good hand hygiene to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.

This is especially given the fact that the Region of the Americas, which is made of Latin America and the Caribbean, has been identified as the most affected region by the virus. In the Americas, there are 21,370,015 cases with 654,512 deaths.
