The Guyana Civil Aviation Training School (CATS) this week held a virtual graduation ceremony for 13 trainees, who successfully completed the Aeronautical Information Management and Air Traffic Control Assistant (AIMO-0120) training course.
The 12-week AIMO-0120 training started on February 3, 2020 but was suspended when the COVID-19 pandemic took hold in Guyana. The programme recommenced virtually on April 6.
The Ab Initio training prepares trainees for employment in the Air Navigation Services (ANS) Directorate. The new batch of trainees has commenced the required on-the-job training in the Aeronautical Information Services and Area Control Centre facilities. Upon successful completion of this component of training, they will take up positions within the ANS Directorate.
The graduation ceremony was held at the ANS Control Tower at Timehri, East Bank Demerara (EBD) and was joined virtually by Public Works Minister Juan Edghill; Minister within the Public Works Ministry, Deodat Indar and GCAA Director General Egbert Field.
Minister Edghill, in his feature address, noted that trainees chose to embark on a career that could be considered highly safety-critical and required a great amount of discipline, at a time when Guyana was evidently at the cusp of exponential economic growth.
“I dare say that you will have to share the responsibility of ensuring that this country and the aviation sector attain the necessary attitude in achieving its optimum altitude,” he insisted.
Director General Field called on the trainees to maintain high levels of safety standards and to be safety conscious in the evolving aviation industry.
