2 accused in execution-style killing of ex-soldier freed
Following a Preliminary Inquiry (PI), Roderick Thomas and Devon Allen, the two men charged with the January 22, 2019 murder of ex-soldier, Kelvin Walters, were on Friday discharged by Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus. Thomas, 28, of Kitty Georgetown, and Allen, 25, of Albouystown, Georgetown, were arrested shortly after the killing which occurred at Eccles, East Bank Demerara.
In discharging the men, Magistrate Isaacs-Marcus noted that the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case for the offence to be sent to the High Court for trial. Based on reports, on January 22, 2019, Walters, 35; his wife and five-year-old daughter were heading south along the East Bank Demerara highway when gunmen on a motorcycle pounced on them.
After spotting the men, Walters, formerly of La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, struck into them with the car, but the pillion rider shot him to the head during the process. The gunmen fell off the motorcycle and later escaped on foot, leaving the motorcycle and murder weapon behind. They were nabbed while seeking treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
His wife and child escaped unhurt. According to information, the execution-style killing of Walters is linked to a pending High Court trial involving three men who are accused of throwing a grenade at a Toyota Lexus belonging to the owner of Kaieteur News, back in 2017.
The men – Alfie Garraway, Janeil Howard, and Leroy Williams – are awaiting trial for the offence. It was reported that information provided to the police by Walters led to the arrest of the three men accused of the grenade attack.
